An Overview of the Newly Redesigned Mazda BT-50 Pickup Truck and Why it Won’t Hit US Markets

Up to six total brands in the American market offer pickup truck options. However, many other brands do produce them. At Kelly Mazda, we investigated the matter out of curiosity: does Mazda produce a pickup truck? We can tell you that there is – the Mazda BT-50, which was just redesigned for the model year! However, it won’t show up in American markets anytime soon. For a brief overview of the model and the reason why it won’t arrive in the US, continue reading:

The 2020 Mazda BT-50 Overview

Redesigned for the first time in nine years, the Mazda BT-50 offers a unique pickup truck experience for those in the Oceania, Central and South American, Middle East, and African regions. It offers seating for five passengers and owns an automatic transmission. A new 3.0-liter diesel engine option is now available while the model can tow up to 3,500 kilograms (about 7716 lbs). It is consistent with the remaining Mazda models, as it embodies the KODO – Soul of Motion Design theme.

Why Won’t the Mazda BT-50 Hit US Markets?

Though some may be interested to see the Mazda BT-50 compared to other pickup trucks like the Ford Ranger, the US market won’t see it arrive any time soon. This is because of the infamous “chicken tax”. The tax, which is a 25 percent tariff on light trucks, came about after multiple European countries placed tariffs on US chicken imports in the early 1960’s. At the time, chickens were a delicacy in Europe, and the great influx of American-bred chickens into European markets caused European domestic prices to plummet.

As a response, then-President Lyndon B Johnson enacted a similar tax on various products, which included foreign-made pickup trucks. Though other product tariffs have been lifted (potatoes, starch, brandy, etc), the tax remains for vehicles, preventing companies like Volkswagen and Mazda from bringing such models – like the Mazda BT-50 – to market due to the incredibly-high price simply to ship it to the US.
