2019 Mazda CX-9 vs 2018 Mazda6 GT
The highest class of Mazda SUV is the Mazda CX-9, currently in its 2019 model. Meanwhile, the highest class of Mazda sedan is the Mazda6, currently in its 2018 model. Although initially, the 2019 Mazda CX-9 very much trumps the 2018 Mazda6 in terms of power, the 2018 Mazda6 has an engine upgrade starting at its GT trim level. So, which produces more power and better performance, the 2019 Mazda CX-9 or the 2018 Mazda6 GT?
Before we begin, we just wanted to clarify a few things. The GT (Grand Touring) trim isn’t the final trim level of the 2018 Mazda6. There are also the Grand Touring Reserve and Signature trim levels, yet they don’t provide a further change to engine options or power output. Furthermore, the 2019 Mazda CX-9 has 4 available trim levels (Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Signature), but all have the same engine equipped. Therefore, we’ll be comparing the baseline 2019 Mazda CX-9 against the 2018 Mazda6 GT trim level.
2019 Mazda CX-9 Engine and Power Output
The 2019 Mazda CX-9 has a 2.5L turbocharged inline 4 engine. Of course, this is designed as a SKYACTIV®-G engine, as with all Mazda models. This produces up to 227 horsepower with standard fuel and 250 horsepower with premium fuel. Meanwhile, torque is rated at 310 lb-ft.
2018 Mazda6 GT Engine and Power Output
The standard 2018 Mazda6 is equipped with a 2.5L SKYACTIV®-G inline 4 engine. Meanwhile, the 2018 Mazda6 GT has a 2.5L turbocharged SKYACTIV®-G inline 4 engine. As for power output, the 2018 Mazda6 GT has the exact same data listed above for the 2019 Mazda CX-9. That would be 227 or 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque.
Although both the 2019 Mazda CX-9 and the 2018 Mazda6 have the same engine and power output, some things should be noted. The 2018 Mazda6 GT is far lighter and leaner, meaning it gets the most out of this power in terms of performance and handling. However, the 2019 Mazda CX-9 obviously has the advantage in terms of cargo and seating capacity.
