2020 Mazda CX-9 vs 2020 Volkswagen Atlas

A black 2020 Mazda CX-9 compared to a light blue 2020 Volkswagen Atlas.

When researching for the ideal vehicle for you or your family, you may have some reservations. How affordable will an SUV be? Will I have to give up performance for space and seating? With the 2020 Mazda CX-9, you won’t have to sacrifice either.

As a midsize three-row SUV, the 2020 Mazda CX-9 has the drivability and engine performance of smaller models without skimping on standard features. With a starting MSRP of $33,890, you won’t need to purchase large SUVs that can be difficult to drive and guzzle fuel. But how does it stack up to the 2020 Volkswagen Atlas – another three-row crossover with name recognition? We at Kelly Mazda compared the two to see how the 2020 Mazda CX-9 fares.

2020 Volkswagen Atlas

2.5L 4-Cylinder Turbo 6A Engine 2.0L 4-Cylinder Turbo 8A
227 Horsepower 235
310 ft-lbs Torque 258 ft-lbs
24 Combined MPG Fuel Economy 22 Combined MPG

When checking out the base turbo engines, both models appear to have strong specs. While the 2020 VW Atlas boasts more horsepower, the 2020 Mazda CX-9 offers a 22 city / 28 highway MPG range. However, the 2020 Mazda CX-9 engine receives a major boost with premium fuel. Sipping on finer 93 octane fuel, the SKYACTIV®-G turbocharged engine offers up to 250 horsepower and 320 foot-pounds of torque. With the total amount, it can leave the VW Atlas in the dust.

Even when moving on from the engine, the 2020 Mazda CX-9 has a few features that make it stand out from its class. Two, in particular, are the standard adaptive cruise control and heated front seats – both of which do not come standard in the base trim of the VW Atlas. Also, the CX-9 has optional navigation with its MAZDA CONNECT™ Infotainment system. All three of these can come in the base trim of the CX-9 model’s base MSRP. To have all three in the VW Atlas, you’ll need to buy their highest trim.

With more punch and additional features in just the base model, the 2020 Mazda CX-9 is a fantastic option for small families or couples. Even when compared to a brand like Volkswagen, the affordable price and performance make the CX-9 an obvious choice.
